Why Drainage Decides Every Florida Field

Legacy Sports Construction 1 min read

Every failed field we've ever been called to rescue failed the same way: water. Not fiber, not seams, not paint — water, sitting where it shouldn't, doing quiet damage until the surface announced it loudly. In Florida, drainage isn't a line item; it's the design.

What Florida throws at a field

Intense convective storms that drop inches in an hour. A high water table in much of the state. Sandy soils that drain beautifully — sitting over hardpan layers that don't. A hurricane season that stress-tests every assumption annually.

How engineered drainage actually works

Surface planarity. Laser grading builds deliberate slope into the plan so water moves instead of ponding.

The permeable base. Under a synthetic field, a compacted, free-draining aggregate profile moves water down and out — this is where the money you can't see goes, and why our estimates itemize it.

Collection. Perimeter drains, flat-pipe or trench collectors under the profile, tied into site stormwater. Sized for Florida rain intensity, not national averages.

The site conversation. A field is part of a watershed. Where does the water go after your property line? Permits care; so should your contractor.

Questions that expose weak drainage design

  • "What's the design storm this system handles?" — silence is your answer.
  • "Show me the base gradation spec." — 'crushed rock' is not a spec.
  • "Where are the collector tie-ins on the site plan?" — if there's no site plan, there's no design.

The payoff

A properly drained field plays through the storm season, keeps its warranty intact, and protects the base — the most expensive thing you bought. It's the least glamorous part of every field we build and the most important. Bring us your site and we'll tell you what the water wants to do before we tell you what the field costs.
