UNDERSTANDING FRDAP
The Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP) is a competitive state-funded grant program administered by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. It provides funding to local governments and qualifying non-profit organizations for the development of outdoor recreational facilities — including synthetic turf fields, running tracks, multi-use courts, and park improvements.
Florida municipalities, counties, and special districts are the primary eligible applicants. Qualifying non-profit organizations that provide public recreational access may also apply. Projects must be located on publicly accessible land and serve a recreational purpose. Private facilities, gated communities, and for-profit entities do not qualify under standard FRDAP rules.
FRDAP awards up to $200,000 per project. The program operates on an annual application cycle, typically opening in the fall. Projects valued above $200,000 can use FRDAP as a funding layer and stack it with other programs — including the Florida Field Surface Grant and federal LWCF matching funds — to cover a much larger portion of total project cost.
Synthetic turf fields, natural grass athletic fields, running tracks, multi-use sports courts, pickleball courts, playground equipment, pavilions, and park infrastructure all qualify. The facility must be publicly accessible and on land owned or leased long-term by the applicant.
Legacy Sports Construction has secured over $450K in grant funding for Florida clients including municipalities in Brevard County, Polk County, and the Greater Orlando area. We manage the full application — program identification, eligibility review, narrative writing, budget documentation, site plan coordination, and compliance reporting. When Legacy builds your facility, grant assistance is included at no additional cost.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Does it cost anything to have Legacy handle my grant application?
+
Grant consulting is included as part of our project services. When Legacy builds your facility, we manage the grant process at no additional charge. Our incentive is simple: a funded project is a built project.
How long does a FRDAP grant application take?
+
FRDAP has a single annual application cycle, typically opening in the fall. Field Surface Grant windows vary. We assess your timeline during the initial consultation and ensure you don’t miss a cycle.
Can we stack multiple grants on one project?
+
Yes. Many of our clients fund projects using 2-3 stacked programs simultaneously. FRDAP + Field Surface Grants can cover a significant portion of a synthetic turf installation for a qualifying school district.
Our school is private. Do we qualify for FRDAP?
+
FRDAP is limited to public entities and qualifying non-profits. However, certain 501(c)(3) organizations and private institutions qualify for select programs. We do a full eligibility assessment before recommending a path forward.
What types of sports facilities qualify for funding?
+
Synthetic turf fields, natural grass athletic fields, running tracks, multi-use courts, pickleball courts, playgrounds, and park improvements all qualify under various programs. Call us to assess your specific project.
DOES YOUR PROJECT QUALIFY?
If your project checks all five boxes, you have a strong grant application. We'll handle the rest.
