From Budget Meeting to Kickoff: a School Field Timeline

The question behind every first phone call: "Can it be ready for the season?" Sometimes yes — but the honest answer depends on when you start counting. Here's the realistic arc of a Florida school field, and where the calendar hides its traps.

Phase 1 — The number (start ~12+ months out)

Boards approve numbers, not dreams. A site walk and an itemized estimate — ours takes 48 hours after the visit — gives your budget request a defensible basis, and gives grant applications the cost documentation reviewers score well.

Phase 2 — Funding and approvals

Capital budget cycles and grant calendars run on their own clocks; FRDAP, for instance, has an annual window. This phase is where projects most often lose a year — not in construction, but in waiting to start the paperwork.

Phase 3 — Design, engineering, permitting

Civil drawings, drainage design, stormwater permitting. In Florida the drainage engineering is the schedule driver here. Weeks to a few months depending on jurisdiction — compressible if the survey and geotech start early.

Phase 4 — Construction

For a typical synthetic field: demolition and earthwork, base construction and compaction, drainage installation, then carpet, infill and inlays. Phase 5 — Certification and handoff
